How the six guesses work

Heardle Unlimited is a music guessing game and a bit of ear training. Each wrong guess or skip plays a longer piece of the song's opening. Solve it on the first guess and you earn the 1-second badge.

Read the official rules or the full how-to-play guide.

  1. Guess 1

1 second. The first hit, snare or riff.

  2. Guess 2

2 seconds. Tempo and groove start to show.

  3. Guess 3

4 seconds. The chord pattern begins.

  4. Guess 4

7 seconds. The rhythm section locks in.

  5. Guess 5

11 seconds. The lead-in to the verse.

  6. Guess 6

16 seconds. The full intro melody.

Clips that start instantly

Most music quizzes embed a streaming player, which means buffering and songs that are blocked in some countries. Here the audio is generated in your browser with the Web Audio API, so there is nothing to load. See supported devices or how it's built.

Four ways to guess faster

More in how to recognize songs faster and our winning strategies.

Listen to the drums

Drum sounds date a song fast. Gated reverb points to the 1980s, and 808 sub-bass points to hip-hop and trap.

Count the tempo

Above 160 BPM usually means punk or synthwave. Around 120 to 128 BPM is typical of pop and disco.

Spot signature instruments

DX7 chimes, Rhodes keys in R&B or pedal steel in country narrow the genre right away.

Skip on purpose

If the first second is only room noise, skip to 2s or 4s instead of taking a wild guess.
